WHAT IS FIRE RETARDENT (FR)?
A substance that reduces flammability of fuels or delays their combustion, at Tokyo Fabrics we use a quality grade chemical application, applied using robust German machinery, right here in our UK factory – ensuring we can carry out regular periodic quality checks.

IS FR A LEGAL REQUIREMENT?
It is a legal requirement in the uk.

WHAT IS FR DUE DILIGENCE?
Whereby a manufacturer exercises reasonable steps to avoid committing an offence, for example applying the minimum amount of FR chemical to ensure the legally compliant retardant burn times are adhered to.

WHAT ARE THE IMPLICATIONS OF POOR FR?
Whilst producing inferior fabric lends itself to quality control issues, FR lends itself to being a legal requirement, poor FR application can cause damage to surrounding fixtures & furniture, or worse can put actual lives at risk.

WHAT IS YOUR FR PROCESS?
The method we employ to produce our FR fabrics is by application of fire retardant chemical coating, right here in the UK.

Our stringent chemical process begins with the technical machinery, soured from Germany it provides precision coating & confirms complete synthesis.

Once loaded onto the machine a thick layer of specialist FR chemical coating is technically heat fused onto the underside of the material.

To remain an industry leader in FR, we optionally apply 15% additional chemical above the mandatory requirement using laser technology to evenly apply the coating.

Following the heat process, the fabric then cools & enters the quality inspection area where swatches are cut from various parts of the roll, to ensure equal application of coating – should a roll fail to be equal throughout it reintroduces the above stage.

Unlike some FR specialists, we are proud to conduct fire tests for our customers on any part of a roll from any single roll at any time.

The journey then proceeds through a laboratory fire testing where our technicians rigorously apply fire to test its FR structure.

Tactical burn test – besides the legally required 20 second test we also conduct a 25 second & 30 second test.

Once confirmed its documented & only then is FR fabric released onto our shop floor – stored amongst the millions of meters we generate yearly.
